The current draft of this memo reflects comments received during the last call period. In particular, a reference to RFC 2119 has been added, as have some directives on how to handle character sets with embedded language tagging facilities. 1. Abstract This document examines the problems associated with use of MIME security multiparts and gateways to non-MIME environments. A set of requirements for gateway behavior are defined which provide satisfactory facilities to accomodate the transfer of security multiparts through gateways.

Previous work on integrating PGP with MIME (including the since withdrawn application/pgp content type) has suffered from a number of problems, the most significant of which is the inability to recover signed message bodies without parsing data structures specific to PGP. This work makes use of the elegant solution proposed in RFC1847, which defines security multipart formats for MIME. The secu...

The new content types are subtypes of multipart: signed and encrypted. Each will conta...
متن کاملImplications of MIME for Internet Mail Gateways
The recent development of MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) offers a wide range of new opportunities for electronic mail system systems. Most of these opportunites are relevant only to user agents, the programs that interact with human users when they send and receive mail. However, some opportunities are also opened up for mail transport systems. While MIME was carefully designed so...
